Grand Canyon - Skywalk

March 14th, 2007 . by Jilly

I’m not afraid of heights, but even this sounds a little scary to me…

Grand Canyon West, a destination owned and operated by the Hualapai Tribe at the Grand Canyon’s western rim, announces March 28, 2007 as the official public opening date of The Skywalk. The Skywalk will be the first-ever cantilever shaped glass walkway to suspend more than 4,000 feet above the canyon’s floor and extend 70 feet from the canyon’s rim.

Here’s a picture of what they envision it to look like. Its not a bridge that goes completely across the canyon, its like a ledge that juts out…skywalk-grand-canyon-1.jpg

I’m taking off today, I’m camping at San Elijo State Beach through Monday. This has been a family tradition, since I was a little kid. Even though I have no kids (yet), I really look forward to it every year - surfing and campfires and bbq.

I also, have tickets to see Jeremy Enigk this saturday at the Casbah. I’m really look forward to seeing him perform. I love his solo work. Casbah is a perfect venue, since its so small and intimate.

Do you feel like the summer is almost over? I know school is starting and the new season for sitcoms has started. I actually started school this week. Jason and I are taking Japanese 101 class at the community college. So, this camping trip is like my last summer hurrah.

Queen of the road!

June 21st, 2006 . by Sandra

 hveravellir!

Since I decided to move to Denmark next winter I’ve been making lists of things that I have to do/see before I leave this strange island of mine. One of these things is to travel as much outside Reykjavík as I can. All these amazing places that I’ve always wanted to see but never had the chance to. All those mountain roads that I’ve dreamt about for so long. I’m feeling like its now or never.

So I’ve been going crazy driving anywhere and everywhere. And last weekend I finally went the famous mountain road called Kjalvegur (just two days after it was open) where you drive between two glaciers. I found the landscape there to be amazing! The road takes you to a magical place called Hveravellir. Its really crazy to think of being so close to a glacier but having all those hot springs there! There are two logdes there and a camping area and next time I’m defiantly gonna stay the night there and just relax in the hot springs there.

So if you see some lunatic driving too fast with funny sunglasses its moi… queen of the road!

Give Me the World by Leila Hadley

April 16th, 2006 . by Jilly

Give Me the World
is a travel memoir written by a 26-year old New Yorker woman and her 6 year old son. Leila Hadley is sick of her life, she works all the time, she’s buying stuff she doesn’t need, she’s in debt, she’s in a rut. One day a friend of hers suggests that maybe she should take some time off and travel around the world. And she does it.

The amazing thing about this story is that it takes place in the 50’s. So she goes to places in the Middle East and she’s relatively safe. She gets to go places that would be far too dangerous for an American to go to these days. I’ve heard that certain areas of the Middle East are really beautiful and I know I probably won’t ever get to go there and see for myself. She goes to Hong Kong, Ceylon, Bangkok, Dehli, Dubai.

Her trek ends up lasting 18 months all together. She meets up with 4 American men that are sailing a schooner around the world and she talks her way into hitching a ride with them.

This story is very well written. Its clear that the author really has a knack for colorful descriptions so much that you can clearly imagine what it would have been like to be there. Before she went on her trip, she worked for a magazine. After she came back and wrote this back, she become a travel writer specializing in books about travelling with kids.

If you like books like this, you would probably also really enjoy Maiden Voyage by Tania Albi.

I Left the South, I Travelled North

We’re back from our trip to the Pacific Northwest. Portland was awesome. There’s no sales tax, gasoline is cheap, drinks are inexpensive, cheap houses, they pump your gas for you, good music scene and shopping, and the city is clean and beautiful.

Forest behind a random rest stop, that serves free apple cider and hot cocoa.

I heart Portland.
