Sabrosa Purr Show

October 26th, 2007 . by kristy

sabrosa purr.jpg
Melodic. Hypnotic. Class rock? At the Bordello in LA in last, indefinable seemed to be the word of the day for Sabrosa Purr. At times, the trio even crossed into the realm of experimental garage band–that is, if said garage band could actually play their instruments, and if they were so in sync they seem to share the same DNA. In any case, I was impressed with what I saw and heard. At one point, my husband leaned over and whispered “I think these guys may actually make it.” I agree. Fancy adjectives aside, I must use the old cliche…don’t hate me…wait for it…THEY ROCKED.

Sabrosa Purr will be throwing a release party for their new album on November 7th at the Roxy in LA.

I Like the Way You Work It

Almost 5 years ago Quinton, Maureen, and I were in a club in Reykjavik and they started playing ‘No Diggity’. We cracked up because it seemed like Europeans dance different than Americans. Americans shake their butts more. Well… all American except me (I have no rhythm).

The Blackstreet version is damn good. But the Klaxons did them right and did a great cover here. The Klaxons also do a fantastic cover of Justin Timberlake’s ‘My Love’ here.

SomaFM - Commercial Free Independent Radio

October 24th, 2007 . by Jilly

indychick.jpg

There’s a really awesome internet radio station that my husband just reminded me of a few weeks ago. SomaFM is free, there are no commercials, and they play independent music. What’s not to love?

Its the perfect background music for when I’m working. I love it because I find new music. I heard this alt-country song and the voices sounded vaguely familiar. It was Jason Collett (of Broken Social Scene) singing with Emily Haines of Metric. On the album Emily Haines lends her vocals for this song, on the video I linked to its Leslie Feist.

Enjoy.

Prayers for Rain

By now most of you have heard that there are fires burning all over Southern California. At the end of last week it was super dry and windy. It seems like most of the fires have started in the east inland dry areas and the wind has blown the fires west. About 250,000 have been evacuated from their homes as a precaution, about 1,300 houses have been destroyed, and 1 person has died.

We’re okay, but a little bit of rain would be wonderful. The closest fires to us are Fallbrook and Escondido. Its very unlikely that the fires will reach us.

Many people have been evacuated to Qualcomm Stadium and the Del Mar Fair Grounds. Local hotels have opened their doors to people with nowhere to go. There are people that have lost everything. Its crazy.

It seems like everyone is getting plenty of notice to evacuate, they’re doing reverse 911 phone calls telling people to get ready to evacuate.

At the grocery store, people were buying up all of the water and ice. Cars were lined up around the gas station. ATM machines weren’t working, because the electricity was out. I stocked up on water and non-perishable items. It was really weird to think about where we would go and what we would do.

We always hear that we should have disaster plans. Do you have a little bit of food and water stored up? Do you have somewhere to go, if you have to leave your home?

DIGITAL Movie Cinemas

October 18th, 2007 . by nathan

Sony

Sony said that it will begin installing 54 4K digital cinema projectors, each providing four times the resolution of 1080p, in U.S. movie theaters next month.

The first SXRD 4K systems will be going to AMC theaters in Dallas (12 screens), Indianapolis (14 screens), Riverside, Calif. (16 screens) and San Diego (12 screens). Sony will be installing both its SRX-R210 10,000 lumen and the SRX-R220 18,000 lumen unit, which provide a maximum resolution of 4096×2160 pixels and be used on screen sizes ranging from 42 to 60 ft.

According to Sony, the high resolution will virtually eliminate artifacts in frames even for people watching a movie from the front row. Pixels are set an 8.5 micrometer pitch with an intra-pixel gap of 0.35 micrometers. Each of the roughly 8.8 million pixels is just about the size of the letter “e in the Liberty Quarter, Sony said.

The SXRD technology was originally introduced by Sony through its “Qualia brand of high-end home entertainment devices. In 2004, the company announced its first 4K projectors and the capability to display four HD movies next to each other from the same projector.

The 1200-pound SRX-R210 and SRX-R220 both are rated at a contrast ratio of 2000:1 and integrate xenon lamps as source of the projector beam. The 18,000 lumen projectors use a 4.2 kW lamp, the 13,000 lumen model a 3.0 kW lamp and the 8000 lumen unit a 2.0 kW model. Sony said that the projectors will consume on average 1.2 kW of power.

The 4K projectors are scheduled to go in operation in December.

Yes people…. There could be a chance we will get to see RAMBO IV in hi res digital on the big screen!!!!

NPR gets awkward with Sigur Ros

October 14th, 2007 . by Jilly

Sigur Ros
were interviewed on NPR’s Bryant Park Project last week, in what just might be the most hilariously awkward, cringe-inducing interview ever. One bad question after another.

“Did you start off with more traditional lyrics and work towards the gibberish?”

Here’s the interview. I’m surprised the interviewer didn’t get punched in the face.

Radiohead’s ‘In Rainbows’ - Bits & Bobs

October 13th, 2007 . by Jilly

What do you think of the album? I like it better than Thom Yorke’s solo project, and the last few Radiohead albums. I need to give it a couple more listens, before I write about it.

The Chicago Tribune reported on Friday that In Rainbows has been downloaded 1.2 million times. But what I want to know is has everyone been paying, because you know £0.00 was an option too? What’s the average amount that people have thought that the album is worth?

NYC’s Gothamist chatted with Johnny Greenwood this week. Did I mention he has amazing cheek bones? Here’s a short excerpt…

Why give people the option to pay whatever they want? It’s just interesting to make people pause for even a few seconds and think about what music is worth now. I thought it was an interesting thing to ask people to do and compare it to whatever else in their lives they value or don’t value.

Have you gotten any figures of how much people are choosing to pay?
No we get the numbers tomorrow supposedly. Yeah, I don’t know. The more exciting thing for me is just hearing it on the radio today and knowing it’s landed on everybody’s desk at the same time. That’s what’s exciting. But yeah, I’m sure our manager will have some idea soon.

Sigur Ros Documentary - Heima

October 13th, 2007 . by Jilly

heima.jpg

Heima (At home) is a documentary and double DVD set about Sigur Rós’ tour around Iceland in the summer of 2006. After touring all around the world, they missed being home. I think all Icelanders are in love with the breathtaking, unreal landscape of their country. The documentary also includes footage of an acoustic concert played for family and friends at Gamla Borg, a coffee shop in the small town Borg.

Here’s the trailer

The first DVD will contain the documentary, while the second DVD will feature full length versions of the songs. The DVD will be released on November 20th.

Heima is being screened all over the world right now, check here for dates and locations.
