St. Vincent: Paris is Burning (video)

September 26th, 2007 . by Jilly

I picked up a copy of St. Vincent’s album Marry Me this weekend. St. Vincent is the solo project of Annie Clark (formerly of Polyphonic Spree).

I cannot stop listening to this song…

She’s playing tomorrow night at the Casbah, anybody want to go?

Thisisthelast… Athlete Album Review

September 25th, 2007 . by Jilly

Athlete is back with their third album entitled “Beyond the Neighbourhood“. It was produced in their own studio by the members of the band. This album is much more upbeat and energetic than their last album “Tourist“, which was one of my favorite albums of 2005. I still can’t get enough of that album, I love the unique voice.

Beyond the Neighbourhood is a solid album from beginning to end. There’s a lyrical theme weaved throughout the whole album about trying to deal with life. Willetts says, “We’re trying to figure out a lot of things. From war to the environment to falling in love to dealing with death.”

The first track ‘In Between 2 States’ is a dreamy instrumental. You can hear the influence of Massive Attack. Its a beautiful way to start off the album.

‘Hurricane’ is the first single off the album. This is the song that will be used in a car commercial or used in a TV show. Inspired by an article in National Geographic about the increase of hurricanes in the Gulf and East Coasts. They’re questioning whether this is something we just have to get used to. This upbeat song is not defeatist, its kind of got a defiant flair that runs through the whole album.

My favorite song off this new album is ‘The Outsiders’, which has a nice hip-hop beat to it. It sort of reminds me of that Radiohead hip-hop mashup album and that Lupe Fiasco song ‘Us Placers‘, which sampled a Thom Yorke song.

Athlete shows that they’re picking up right where my favorite brit-pop bands left off. I really like how this album has a bit more electronic in it, they’re not just a one trick pony. I can’t wait to see what else these guys do.

“Beyond the Neighbourhood”
is being released in the U.S. today.

Feast your eyes on the greatest pizza ever created! Forget cheese being the only ingredient in a stuffed-crust pizza, Pizza Hut’s new Double Roll sticks hot dog sausages in there too. It’s also lovingly sprinkled with hamburger pieces for the full fast food meat experience. The medium size costs 2500 yen (£10/$20.50) while the large will set you back 3550 yen (£14/$29)

Ever since I saw the iPod commercial with Feist on Sunday, I haven’t been able to get that song out of my head.

Here’s the video for “1 2 3 4“…

Feist recently did an “Unplugged” performance on the VH1 show VSPOT. You can watch 3 of those songs here.

Thisisthelast…Brian Jonestown Massacre Concert Review

September 18th, 2007 . by Jilly

brian2.jpg

I saw the rock documentary (rockumentary?) Dig! a few years ago. It followed the careers of the Brian Jones Town Massacre and the Dandy Warhols, and their friendship/rivalry over the years. I don’t have any of the BJTM’s albums, but I like their sound. I think they make incredibly beautiful creative music. They have 3 albums coming out this year alone.

I finally got to see the BJTM play with Dimmer (from New Zealand) last night at the Belly Up. It seemed like a lot of people there had seen Dig! and wanted to see Antone freak out. People were shouting insults trying to get a reaction out of him. One second Antone would be yelling back and incoherently rambling (about Lincoln, Schwarzenegger, Iraq, Jamaica, Jesus), and then the next second they’re playing a totally beautiful song. The music was great. They started late and played a really long set.

But i hated being there and see people pick on Antone, who clearly has problems. I’m going to pick up his albums (all 30 of them) and pass the next time they come to town. They have an album coming out called “My Bloody Underground“, which they’ve already leaked on their website.

I hope someday these guys get it together.

Foreign Accent Syndrome

September 16th, 2007 . by nathan

A Czech speedway racer discovered his inner British toff after another rider ran over his head.

Non-English speaker Matej Kus, 18, took the spill during a race in the UK. Paramedics were stunned when he came round and asked where he was – in perfect English. It soon became apparent that Kus had lost his memory, forgetting he was a Czech bike racer, and presumably thinking he was an accent coach at the BBC.

Team manager Peter Waite told Ananova that Kus sounded “like a newsreaderâ€?. The biker’s foray into the world of received pronunciation was shortlived, however. As soon as his memory returned, two days later, his command of English evaporated.

Speaking through an interpreter, Kus said: “There must be some English deep in my head…Hopefully I can pick some English up so I’ll be able to speak it without someone having to hit me over the head.”

With the Czech capital Prague being the UK’s number one destination for stag weekends, Kus’s hopes may be folorn.

Doctors put the baffling linguistic transformation down to Foreign Accent Syndrome, a rare condition where a blow to the head – or a stroke – damages the parts of the brain that control speech.

In 2004 a Bristol woman woke up speaking French and thinking she was living in Paris. She was subsequently diagnosed with Susac’s syndrome. As she explained to the Daily Mail last year, “It might sound funny to others, but suddenly thinking you are French is terrifying.”®

Oldsters Help Propel Wii to Number 1

September 16th, 2007 . by Jilly

Its nothing new that old people play the Wii. But I still get a kick out of seeing the pictures. Its pretty amazing that for the first time in 17 years, Nintendo Wii has taken the worldwide lead of a videogame console. Its because they’ve reached out to a different target market, and its worked.

My mom told me that there was an advertisement in her Good Housekeeping magazine for the Nintendo DS game Brain Age. Brain Age has puzzles, sudoku, and math problems designed to keep the brain active. My mom’s playing Brain Age now, and I think that’s pretty damn cool.

My First Post

September 14th, 2007 . by nathan

Hi guys… im new to the game….. first post…. and I would like to bring something new to the table…

Sneaker Talk…

Now I know that California is embedded in the history of the VANS, and there are some beautiful ones out there….. I also know that Chucks are maybe most preferable in this blog…. But lets get down to the nitty gritty…. I have been collecting for a little while now, and what got me into it was the “re-release”…. I saw a sneaker at a shop that I once owned…. once loved….. once lost….. once longed for…..

U know when my parents bought us new sneakers, we loved them so much, for the first week we would sleep in them…. Not even taking them out of the house..

So to be back in one of these…. well it was a beautiful thing…..

Anyway… first off… lets check out my latest purchase…. Puma x Alife First Round NY
