Flight of the Conchords - Ladies of the World

August 28th, 2007 . by Jilly

Just 2 more episodes and the first season of Flight of the Concords is over. On August 17th, HBO announced that FOTC would have a second season premiering in 2008.

In several interviews, Bret McKenzie has stated that the band has used most of their songs. Its likely that they will need time to develop new material.

I thought that the first few episodes were hilarious, the middle episodes were sort of funny. But the last episode I watched was great (Episode 10), and it had this song in it…

New Rasputina Album: Oh Perilous World

August 24th, 2007 . by Jilly

ColdGoldII.jpg

If you love music, but hate how greedy record companies are -buy CDs at concerts. This guarantees that the proceeds go directly to the band.

A few weeks ago, Jason and I saw Rasputina play. We picked up their new album Oh Perilous World at the concert, we got the deluxe 2 disc edition. The second disc includes, previously unreleased songs, a nice instrumental version of “The Infidel is Me”, and a different version of “The Pruning”.

I’ve been listening to this album everyday for the last few weeks. I think it’s absolutely brilliant. The songs mix history, bizarre current events, and dark humor. “Champion” is mostly the translation of an Osama Bin-Laden speech and “Child Soldier” references the phenomenon of African children’s armies. I really like how everyone sings on “Old Yellow Cake”, even the drummer.

“Yellow Cake”

Please, buy merchandise at concerts. This is the best way to get your money into the hands of the artists and keep the awful middle man out.

Damn the man!!!

Morrissey Turns Down $75 Million for Smiths Reunion

August 23rd, 2007 . by Jilly

smiths.jpg

I just read this on Pitchfork

Turns out Moz was approached with an offer of $75 million smackers, payable upon completion of at least 50 worldwide shows provided Johnny Marr was in the band (no love for Andy and Mike?). Morrissey– who’d like it to be known once and for all that it’s not about the music but, rather, about the hurting– turned them down. Morrissey previously bragged about how Coachella offered the Smiths $5 million to reunite, but that, it appears, was small potatoes.

Morrissey wanted to make this very clear so that there could be no rumors that they might reunite at a festival, and get fans all worked up. I can’t help but wonder if Morrissey is holding out for more money.

Reunions are usually disappointing, but I still would pay money to see the Smiths back together one last time.

Caribou New Album: Andorra

August 22nd, 2007 . by Jilly

050407_caribou.jpg

I must be living under a rock, because I never heard of Caribou until just last week. Caribou is Canadian Dan Snaith, an indie electronic/psychedelic musician. He previously recorded under the name Manitoba until threatened by a lawsuit by ‘Handsome Dick’ Manitoba. Did I mention Snaith has his
Ph.D. in Mathematics?

His new album Andorra was released yesterday. You can stream the entire album here.

Here is the video for “Melody Day”…

Pitchfork has a nice interview with Snaith here.

BBC has done a mini documentary on the making of the album here.

I’m a sucker for JOHNNY MARR

August 10th, 2007 . by Jilly

I’ll admit it. I like this clip, just because I like to watch Johnny Marr play the guitar.

Here is Modest Mouse performing “Missed the Boat” on Conan…
