Lupe Fiasco samples Thom Yorke

May 30th, 2007 . by Jilly

lupeskateboard.jpg

This is awesome. Spine Magazine has Lupe Fiasco’s song ‘US Placers’, Pharrell and Kanye West rap on it, and he samples Thom Yorke.

You can check it out here.

I’ve heard a few different Radiohead cover albums (a reggae one, and a children’s lullaby one), but the best one I’ve found is a hip hop mashup album by Panzah Zandahz. The album is called ‘Me & This Army:Radiohead Remixes”. You can listen to one of those songs here.

If you like the sound of the Lupe Fiasco song, you’ll definitely love this. I do.

Peeping Tom on the Henry Rollins Show

May 30th, 2007 . by Jilly

The musical guest on the Henry Rollins Show this week is Peeping Tom (Mike Patton of Faith No More).

They perform “We’re Not Alone”, with lady beatboxer Butterscotch, although she has just a small part in the song. After their performance Mike sits down and answers a couple questions (what he is influenced by, where does he come up with such an interesting mix of guest singers). Mike is always very candid and funny. Henry Rollins is not in any of these clips.

You can check out the performance and interview here.

Lily Allen and Deborah Harry - Heart of Glass

May 29th, 2007 . by Jilly

Throughout her tour, Lily Allen has been covering Blondie’s Heart of Glass. Last Friday on the Today Show, Lily got to perform with Deborah Harry.

I think that Lily can sing the song better than Blondie can. Maybe it was just an off day for Blondie.

Control - Movie Trailer

May 29th, 2007 . by Jilly

Sorry for the lack of posts these last few days. We just got back from Arizona. We visited some old friends. It was 110 degrees out, but it didn’t feel uncomfortable. They had a pool and air conditioning and a margarita machine.

Here’s the trailer for “Control”,that movie about Joy Division’s singer Ian Curtis. What do you think?

How did you spend your extra long weekend?

Rasputina - New Album and Summer Tour!!!

May 22nd, 2007 . by Jilly

Rasputina has a new album coming out on June 26 titled “Oh Perilous World”. Their official website describes the album…

Oh Perilous World is the long awaited new studio album from chamber-rock trio Rasputina. Deciding that current world events were more bizarre than anything from the distant past, Rasputina foundress Melora Creager culled words, phrases and whole stories from the Internet that especially intrigued her to create the lyrical inspiration for this album.

They will be be doing an extensive US tour this summer. Check here for tour dates. I picked up my tickets yesterday. I’ve seen them about 3 times now and they’re a really great live act. Jana Hunter will be opening for them on the first half of the tour and My Brightest Diamond will be the opening act for the second half.

Rasputina front-woman Melora Creager has put out a solo album. It sounds like another Rasputina album, and that’s not a bad thing. You can listen to the whole album here. I especially like her cover of Tom Petty’s “American Girl”.

Tori Amos - AOL Sessions

May 20th, 2007 . by Jilly

I cannot get enough of her new album. I love all of the songs on the album (except for Fat Slut). Here are 3 songs from her AOL Sessions last week…

“Bouncing off Clouds”

“Roosterspur Bridges”

“Almost Rosey”

All I want to know is - when is she coming to San Diego?

“Controlâ€? Premiers At Cannes Film Festival - Tribute to Joy Division’s Ian Curtis

May 18th, 2007 . by Jilly

Today marks the 27th anniversary of the death of Joy Division’s Ian Curtis. To mark this event the biopic “Control“, is premiering at the Cannes Film Festival. The movie covers his life from when Joy Division formed until his death at the young age of 23. The film is based on the book his wife Deborah wrote called “Touching From a Distance“.

The film was directed by Anton Corbijn, this is his directorial debut. He’s had an illustrious career as a pop-photographer and directing numerous music videos. He photographed Joy Division in their heyday. He’s cast Samantha Morton (from In America) for the role of Curtis’ wife. In an interview with Corbijn about why he casted Sam Riley for the role of Curtis he said…

A lot of bands I met, including Joy Division, were kind of underdressed - a thin coat on, smoking and shivering in the cold. When I met Sam it was also in the winter and he was totally the same…had an innocence and a freshness that I was hoping for but never thought I would find.

The world lost a talented poet and songwriter. It’s not hard to see the influence of his music on lots of music that we listen to today. I think that if there’s anybody that could do this story justice, Corbijn can.

Who says girls can’t beatbox?

May 16th, 2007 . by Jilly

Today I watched an interview with Mike Patton of Peeping Tom. In it he mentioned that Rahzel told him that he was not gonna make it for a couple of dates on the tour. Patton was like..how am I gonna replace you? And he said that Rahzel suggested Buttercup could sit in for him. It worked out perfect because she’s from Sacramento (Davis) and Patton lives in San Francisco.

Butterscotch is a 21-year-old beatboxer. She’s amazing. Here’s a clip of her from the Tom Green show (I like this clip because there’s no Tom Green in it)…

Butterscotch performed with Peeping Tom at Coachella this year. Danny Devito announced them at Coachella and apparently Devito is much cooler than any of us ever realized.

Polyphonic Spree to Tour - Let’s get Happy

May 14th, 2007 . by Jilly

I saw this biography about Bjork and in it they interviewed Bono, because they toured together a long time ago. In it, Bono said that he admired Bjork’s ability to write songs that were happy. He said that it’s easier to “paint it black” and talk about how much your life sucks. But Bjork writes songs like “Violently Happy”. Polyphonic Spree is another infectiously happy band. They make me want to put on a white robe and worship the sun (not really). For this album they’ve traded in their white robes for black militairy outfits with peace signs on them, they’re such hippies.

I just read on Pitchfork that the Polyphonic Spree will be going on tour this summer. The Fragile Army is due to be released June 19th.
