New Beirut Video - “Elephant Gun”

April 30th, 2007 . by Jilly

Here’s the new video for Beirut’s “Elephant Gun” off of the Lon Gisland EP. It kind of has a quirky, racey, Moulin Rougey-ness feel to it. You’ll probably love it or hate it.

Today my friends are going back to Australia. Daniel and Michelle’s wedding was yesterday. Congratulations guys!!! I have been having such a nice time being a tourist in my own town.

Coachella or Bust???

April 26th, 2007 . by Jilly

coachella1.jpg

The Coachella Music Festival is this weekend. They’ve posted the set times here, hopefully you will be able to catch all of the bands you hope to see.

AT&T blue room will be hosting a live webcast of the whole weekend here, I’m not making it to any of the 3 days. So I will probably be checking out the webcast for the acts on Friday. I’m especially bummed that I’ll be missing Bjork’s performance with her new material. I caught her performance at Coachella a few years ago when she performed in what looked like a gigantic leaf of lettuce.

My friends Daniel and Michelle are getting married this weekend. Michelle is an Aussie and a bunch of her friends and family have made the long trek to be here for her wedding. Her cousins have come all the way from England. Her cousin is missing her wedding to go to Coachella. What a jerk!!!

If you’re making it to Coachella this weekend, be sure to drink lots of water and try not to get stuck behind the big frat boy with the hairy back whose taken his shirt off because he’s sweaty.

Polyphonic Spree Mashup

April 26th, 2007 . by Jilly

Polyphonic_Spree_field_300.jpg

I just came across this on Stereogum

Polyphonic Spree has released a tease of what’s gonna be on their upcoming album. This is an 8 minute mashup, containing sections of all 11 songs off Fragile Army which will be released on June 19th.

Check it out here.

I dig it. I’m hoping they come to a town near me. A few years ago I was up in San Francisco and we found out they were playing there at a little club and I didn’t go. I’m kicking myself, because I heard what a great show they put on.

Bjork on SNL

April 23rd, 2007 . by Jilly

Bjork performed on SNL this last Saturday. This will probably be taken down very soon. Bjork sounds really good, but her backup singers outfits look like squashed grapes. Check it out, the sooner the better…

Thisisthelast…Viva Voce Concert Review

April 19th, 2007 . by Jilly

viva1.jpg

Last Thursday I saw Viva Voce and the Shins at Soma in San Diego. I was excited to see the husband/wife duo play together. It was dissappointing and it wasn’t their fault. The sound quality inside Soma is so bad, its really static-y.

But besides that, I was entranced by Anita Robinson. I have a crush on her. She’s a hottie and she plays the guitar like a man. Its really strange to see such a feminine person moving her body with the guitar. They played a few too many extended guitar solos for my tastes, but it was cool to see the way they looked at each other and drew energy off each other. She later joined the Shins on stage for “Phantom Limb” and a couple of other songs.

I held back on posting this review. With what just happened in Virginia, it really does make everything else seem so mundane. Its just completely horrendous and awful what happened there. I don’t want to not acknowledge it. I sincerely hope that these people will be now left alone to grieve.

Brooklyn Vegan interviews Bjork…

April 14th, 2007 . by Jilly

bjork1.jpg

There are definitive moments in our lives, when we realize that all of our hard work has finally paid off. For Brooklyn Vegan that moment came this week, when they were able to interview Bjork. Brooklyn Vegan is one of my favorite music blogs and it all started with one music fan. I’m really happy for these guys, what a privilege. And what a defining moment!!!

They got the lowdown on what Bjork’s been listening to. And they will be posting the interview shortly. Here is the interview.

They also reported that Bjork will be performing on Saturday Night Live on April 21st, Scarlett Johansen will be hosting.

I’m seriously so proud of these guys.

Non-Rappers covering Rap Songs

April 11th, 2007 . by Jilly

Last week, I had the misfortune of watching the horrible Alanis Morrisette cover of the Black Eyed Peas. I wouldn’t recommend watching it. I now have the image of Alanis gyrating indelibly etched into my mind. I know this is a parody, but I think others have done it better.

I really liked Dynamite Hack’s cover of Boyz-N-The-Hood by N.W.A. You can see it here (NSFW).

Nina Gordon (of Veruca Salt) covered Straight Outta Compton by N.W.A. You can check that out here (also NSFW).

Then there’s this cover of Gin and Juice and here’s a cover of Baby Got Back, which are just alright. But Dynamite Hack’s cover is still the best I’ve ever heard.

Lily Allen & The Bird and the Bee on NPR

Last Saturday, Lily Allen and The Bird and the Bee were on NPR’s live concert series. I know it seems like I can hardly go a week without mentioning Lily Allen.

You can stream both concerts here. But beware this is an unedited concert recording and has language not suitable for little ears.

Enjoy.

Today I’ve been married for 3 years. My husband treats me so good and my friends are so thoughtful, too.

Post Secret is SO Five Minutes Ago

April 10th, 2007 . by Jilly

Awhile back, I found this website called Post Secret. Its where people mail postcards to an address and they write their secret on the postcard, and the guy that runs the website scans the postcard in. For some people its the only way that they can get this secret off their chest. Some of the postcards are sweet, some are perverse.

But I laughed out loud when I read this one, because I have this same problem with my mother-in-law, my mom, and every adult woman that’s over 50 that I come into contact with…
costco.jpg

Anyways, Post Secret has started to lose its lustre to me. Too many weirdos with disturbing secrets. But I like the concept of people contributing through the mail. Today I found this website called Mail Me Art. You can mail these guys an envelope or package with artwork, and once a month they’ll pick a couple of winners (it must have travelled through the mail and it must look amazing) and you get a cool prize.

Here are a few submissions…jenifer_lewis.jpg

I know that many of Thisisthelast’s readers are art school dropouts, so why not submit something?

New Bjork Track - “Earth Intruders”

April 8th, 2007 . by Jilly

I just stumbled across this on Stereogum

I’m a diehard Bjork fan. She can seriously do no wrong in my eyes, she could make a an album of yodeling and I would buy it. But I just don’t like the sound of this song. Maybe it will grow on me?

What do you think?
