I know how that question has been causing you to lose sleep. Well, now the guessing is over. I have to admit that I expected Korn to throw in some heaviness, but they instead did a very chill cover of “Creep”.
There’s been some talk that Portishead has been working on a 3rd album, but details have been few and far between. And then I read this, and I got so excited…

Reconvening for their first live appearance since February, 2005’s Tsunami Benefit one-off– and debuting brand new material– the Portishead supertrio of Geoff Barrow, Adrian Utley, and Beth Gibbons played two songs to a tiny, unsuspecting crowd at Bristol’s Mr Wolfs last night.
Alert Pitchfork reader Hector Gutierez was on hand to witness the magic, billed under the guise of a Grumpy Man DJs event featuring a guest appearance by Barrow. “After a couple of hours [spinning] eclectic sadcore classics from the likes of Tom Waits and Joy Division,” wrote Gutierez, “Geoff and…Adrian Utley began to play ‘Wandering Star’– Geoff playing bass. A few bars in Geoff picked up the mike and asked ‘Anyone here know how to sing?’ At this point Beth walked on stage and started singing.”
Apparently even venue staff were unaware of the live gig, and the person working the door actually charged Gibbons entry.
“The second song was brand new,” Gutierez continued, “presumably from the forthcoming (if you believe the rumours, sometime this year) album. Rarely have I seen a room full of people all wear exactly the same facial expression, but when I looked at the crowd everyone had their mouths gaping and eyes wide open as if they were witnessing an alien landing. It was wonderful. The new song was completely gorgeous, carried by Beth’s vocals and with very low-key instrumentation.”
Some lucky jerk snapped a bunch of pictures and was kind enought to put them up here. I would’ve flipped out if I had been lucky enough to be there. The best is yet to come.
Jason and I watched Brick this weekend. Brick is a detective story that takes place in the back drop of a highschool. When Brendan (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) finds his ex-girlfriend (Emilie de Ravin) dead, he knows that he has to find out why. The day before he gets a phone call from her. He can tell she’s in trouble, and she’s reaching out to him. But the things she says on the phone are cryptic (pin, brick, frisco). Brendan decides to push his way into the socialite druggie circle at his school until he finds out the truth about her death.
The movie is in the film noir style, even though it takes place in present day with highschool kids. The film was originally inspired by the stories of Dashiell Hammett, known for his hard-boiled detective novels (Maltese Falcon and The Thin Man). They definitely put a fresh spin on the old film noir style. They really pulled it off masterfully. And this movie was filmed in San Clemente.
I really liked this movie, it’s definitely the best thing I’ve seen in a long time.
I think its so lame that Saturday Night Live and NBC do not allow videos of live performances on You Tube. If someone misses an episode, how are they gonna be able to catch the performance if its not put up on the internet somewhere?
I could even understand if they didn’t want the performances on You Tube, but I have no idea why they don’t put the live performances up on their official websites.
In my opinion, the musical guests are normally the most redeeming part of these late night shows, its definitely not the comedy. Why not share?
I think this is really cool. I would love to play video games with my grandparents (but I have to get my hands on a Wii first). The cool thing about the Wii is that it gives people that aren’t very active a chance to be active.
The marketing minds behind Nintendo looked beyond the traditional gamer mediums and advertised its innovations at targets as far from gaming as you can imagine, such as retirees. Nintendo even went against the current and took the Wii to an AARP convention.
Nintendo’s efforts seemed to have paid off. The Chicago Tribune is reporting that the Wii is now the latest rage at the Sedgebrook retirement community in Lincolnshire, where the average age is 77. In particular, the Wii Bowling component of Wii Sports has members of the retirement community hooked on playing the Wii installed inside the Sedgebrooks’s clubhouse lounge.
“I’ve never been into video games, but this is addictive,â€? said 72-year-old Flora Dierbach. “They come in after dinner and play. Sometimes, on Saturday afternoons, their grandkids come play with them … A lot of grandparents are being taught by their grandkids. But, now, some grandparents are instead teaching their grandkids.â€?
Wii Bowling has become so well received that more than 20 residents signed up to participate in a virtual bowling tournament without the need to leave the clubhouse lounge.
Although Wii Sports features cartoon-like graphics and characters—imagery normally aimed at children—the retirees are absolutely taken with the realism offered by the Wii Remote.
“This is pretty realistic. You can even put English on the ball,â€? said Don Hahn, 76, a veteran of numerous real-life bowling competitions. “I used to play Pac-Man a little bit, but with this you’re actually moving around and doing something. You’re not just sitting there pushing buttons and getting carpal tunnel.â€?
I think its pretty cool that Explosions in the Sky played on Conan Tuesday night. Conan knows what’s up. They played an abbreviated version of their song “Welcome, Ghosts” off of their new album All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone.
Here is EITS’s formula for making good songs…
soft + heavy + soft = song perfection
Check it out… Nevermind. NBC had the video taken down. Damn the man!!!!!
Eluvium has a new album out, entitled “Copia“. It was just released this week. Eluvium is a mixture of shoegaze, piano, electronic, and experimental.
Pitchfork has their new song “Prelude for Time Feelers” here. It sounds so good.
I fell in love with Matthew Cooper’s earlier album “An Accidental Memory in Case of Death“, which was all piano music and no vocals, it was dark and beautiful. I didn’t care for his albums that came after, they were a little too ambient.
If that one song is any indication of what the rest of the album will be like, then I’m stoked. Eluvium will be touring with Explosions in the Sky in the next month or two.
Here’s a video of Matthew Cooper playing one of his older songs on the keyboard…
