Dreams of Horses

December 30th, 2006 . by Jilly

Guide dogs are so 2006. The Guide Horse Foundation trains miniature horses to serve as guide horses for blind people. If I was blind I would get a guide horse and take him on the plane with me.

They’re SOOOOO cute.

The Mountain Goats Are Back In Australia (Again)

December 30th, 2006 . by Quinton

Like I’ve said before, I love everything John Darnielle writes, and it seems he never stops touring. He was here earlier in the year in April with the release of an Australian only EP entitled ‘Babylon Springs’, and since then the new full length ‘Get Lonely’ debuted.

Now, the Mountain Goats are back for a few dates:

2 January -Perth, WA, Club Capitol
3 Januray -Adelaide, S.A., Fowler’s Live
5 January -Melbourne, VIC, the Corner Hotel
6 January -Sydney, NSW, Century Theatre (formerly Metro Theatre)
7 January -Brisbane, QLD, the Zoo

And in case you need an excuse to visit Sandra, the Mountain Goats will be in Copenhagen on 5 April 2007.

Indiana Jones IV to begin filming

December 30th, 2006 . by Jilly

I thought that they had put the kabash on this idea. I just read this on Yahoo News

George Lucas said Friday that filming of the long-awaited “Indiana Jones” movie will begin next year. Harrison Ford, who appeared in the three earlier flicks, the last one coming in 1989, is set to star again. Lucas said he and Steven Spielberg recently finalized the script for the film.

The fourth chapter of the “Indiana Jones” saga, which will hit theaters in May 2008, has been in development for over a decade with several screenwriters taking a crack at the script, but it only recently gained momentum.

I don’t have much faith in George Lucas these days. Harrison Ford says he’s in the best shape of his life, although he is 62. I’m sure I’ll regret it, but I still can’t wait to see it.

This is the Last Thom Yorke Folk Album You’ll Ever Need

December 29th, 2006 . by Jilly

Beirut-2-0.jpg

I got the Beirut album this week, and I daresay its the best album I’ve bought all year. Its called the “Gulag Orkestar“. His style is gypsy indie folk. This Santa Fe native is only 20 and he’s a one man band. His vocals remind me of Thom Yorke’s, hence my not so clever title. He worked on his album with Jeremy Barnes (formerly of Neutral Milk Hotel). Its awesome.

You can check out his songs here and here.

Here’s the video for his song “Scenic World”

Meat is Not Murder?

Bob Schauf, with two of his cloned cows in Barron, Wis. Mr. Schauf said his family has been drinking the milk from cloned animals.

I was listening to NPR today and heard that the FDA has declared cloned food to be safe for humans. This finding could make the United States the first country to allow products from cloned livestock to be sold in grocery stores. Even if this gets formerly approved, you won’t see cloned pork chops at the grocery store anytime soon since the technology is still too expensive to be used widely.

Does cloned meat appeal to anybody? If it was completely safe would you eat it?

Lily Allen’s Dog is Missing

December 28th, 2006 . by Jilly

lilyallen_dog.jpg

I just read this story on Modern Age

Lily Allen got an unpleasant surprise this morning when she found out that her dog was stolen. Here are the details (or read more on her Myspace):

My dog who i love very very much was stolen this morning from Capel Road, Forest Gate. London E7. My friend has been looking after her while I have been on holiday and she was taken from his van, parked outside his house.

Please if everybody could pass this message on for me there may be a chance that I can see her again. There is a reward.

Mail me back with any information or call 07909 903565.

Not only am i devastated that my dog has been taken away, but i am also concerned for her wellbeing. She needs an operation on her stomach and is having medical treatment.

please anyone help.

no one will be angry - me and my family just want Maggie home.

This dog is very unique looking. If this picture is going around the internet, someone will recognize the dog if they see it on the street.

R.I.P. Godfather of Soul

From CNN.com

James Brown, the legendary R&B belter, a singer and songwriter who created a foundation for funk and provided the roots of rap, a man of many nicknames but a talent that can only be described as one of a kind, is dead.

He was 73. Brown had severe pneumonia and is said to have died of heart failure.

He was renowned for his shouting vocals and his insane dancing skills. Wikipedia has a bio of his life here. Here’s a youtube of I Feel Good and Sex Machine.

Top 10 Creepiest Fast Food Mascots

December 23rd, 2006 . by Jilly

creepy_mascots.jpg

Fanpop
has come up with the Top 10 Creepiest Fast Food Mascots. I for a long time have felt that the Burger King “The King” mascot is unsettling, and has actually done the opposite of what their ad exec’s intended.

Third mascot to the right, is the original Ronald McDonald. That’s supposed to make little kids want to eat there?

Number eight on the list is Jack (Jack in the Box), who I don’t think is creepy at all. I think those commercial are clever and he’s funny.

Gabba Gabba Goo Goo

December 22nd, 2006 . by Quinton

A while back Jill wrote about Baby Rock Records, who transform pop/rock songs from well known artists into children’s lullabys. (see: Happiness is a Warm Thumb)

ramones

Baby Rock have a few new releases that are set to come out next year, most importantly of which is the lullaby version of The Ramones, available 30 January. I wasn’t much into this concept at first, but now I’m dying to hear a children’s version of ‘Beat On The Brat’ and ‘I Wanna Be Sedated’.

More lullabys to come, including Nine Inch Nails, Bjork, and The Pixies with a version of ‘Head On’.

Still waiting for a Black Flag album.

Slowly Unravels in a Ball of Yarn

December 22nd, 2006 . by Jilly

I went to the Felt Club, two weekends ago. Its a monthly indie arts and crafts fair, where local craftsters sell their goods. I was overwhelmed by the volume of such interesting things they had. I was so happy that there were so many people that felt as stoked about the Felt Club as I did.

A lot of the items looks familiar, because I had seen them on Etsy and Cut and Paste before. Here are a couple of the Felt Club crafters’ websites…

aguiniga design, Boy Girl Party, Poketo, Chebang!, Catia Chien, and here’s all of the other FC vendors.

If you’re searching for a unique present, or if you just want something out of the ordinary and crafty then check out these artists. I promise its nothing like your grandma’s country crafts.
