Introducing…Portugal. The Man

October 30th, 2006 . by Jilly

portugal.jpg

My husband just played for me Portugal. The Man and I really liked it. They sorta sound like a mix of Blonde Redhead and Portishead. They’re originally from Alaska, but are now living in Portland. I’d say they’re kind of indie/soul. Their new album is titled “Waiter: You Vultures“.

I’ve really fallen in love with their song “Marching with 6″. You can take a listen here.

I’m Never Coming Home

October 29th, 2006 . by Quinton

After spending 12 years with the San Diego Padres, manager Bruce Bochy signed a three year deal with rival San Fransisco Giants.
bruce bochy
Overall Bochy spent 24 years with the Padres organization as a player, coach and manager. That’s pretty much my whole lifetime. I’ve never known any other manager than Boch. He’s like my dad. Nine-hundred fifty one career wins, four National League West titles, a World Series appearance. He coached us through the tough years and gave us our very best years as a ball club. It’s so rare that a manager will have such a history with one team such as Bruce Bochy had with the Padres.

I was shocked when I read the news that he was leaving for the Giants. The Giants!?! I hate the Giants! I don’t think I can stomach seeing him in a black SF ball cap. Was I so naïve to think that Bochy would never leave the Padres? That he was married to San Diego? My chin started to quiver and my eyeballs felt squishy with liquid. I needed consolation, but my beautiful Australian curly-headed counterpart didn’t understand my American grief and was no source of solace. So I woke up Daniel Grant, who at the time, was somewhere in Ireland, sleeping. He didn’t really care either, and only grumbled, ‘it’s dark outside’.

I didn’t feel this bad when my dad left.

Tom Waits makes Orphans

October 25th, 2006 . by Quinton

Tom Waits is releasing a 54 song, 3CD set on November 21 entitled ‘Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards’. According to the Anti website, the three albums are separately grouped:

‘Brawlers’ is chock full of raucous blues and full-throated juke joint stomp;
‘Bawlers’ comprises Celtic and country ballads, waltzes, lullabies, piano and classic lyrical Waits’ songs;
while ‘Bastards’ is filled with experimental music and strange tales.

I’m always excited about new Tom Waits material, and in my mind he can do no wrong. That being said, I typically shy away from two/three/four disk ‘collected meterial’ and deluxe special edition box sets. Most of the time they’re full of filler, and special guests, and never before heard songs, and 326 page booklets, and interactive CD Rom… and they’re hideously expensive. But they’re made for diehard fans and that’s about it. I know I’m a sucker for these, and some of them I find rewarding. See: Misfits Coffin Boxset. See: Johnny Cash Unearthed Boxset

You can have a listen to a handful of new Tom Waits songs from ‘Orphans’ here.

And just for kicks, here’s an old interview with Tom.

Lily Allen - videos

October 24th, 2006 . by Jilly

A few weeks ago my sister played me for me a few Lily Allen songs. She’s really cute and spunky as you can see from her video for the song “LDN”. I guess her music would be considered British pop (not like Oasis and Blur). She’s influenced by drum ‘n’ bass and the Specials. I think she’s adorable, even though her style of music is not normally my cup of tea.

Here’s the video for “LDN”…

Here’s a new video that just came out for the song “Littlest Things”, its got a nice film noir vibe to it and Lily Allen works it.

Bill Murray - Actually a Really, Really Nice Guy

October 17th, 2006 . by Jilly

From CNN.com

Bill Murray created a small sensation in the Scottish town of St. Andrews, joining Scandinavian students at a late-night party and even helping to wash the dishes, a newspaper reported Sunday.

And in what The Sunday Telegraph said was life imitating art, the 56-year-old Murray joined up with 22-year-old Norwegian student Lykke Stavnef, who took him to a house where a student party was in full swing.

The newspaper reported that Murray met Stavnef at a bar where he was drinking with fellow golfers after playing in the October 5-8 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in St. Andrews with other actors.

To Stavnef’s surprise, Murray accepted her invitation to a party and accompanied her and her friend to a party, the newspaper said.

She said she was first concerned when the apartment had no clean glasses left, but that Murray was happy to drink vodka from a coffee cup and also helped wash dishes in the cramped kitchen.

The Sunday Telegraph article was accompanied by a photograph that appears to show Murray, dressed in a checkered shirt and a brown vest, washing a metal pot at the sink.

As news spread around the city that Murray had turned up at the student party, the house became crowded with people wanting to meet the star of “Ghostbusters,” the article said.

How Many of Me?

October 17th, 2006 . by Jilly

I saw on the news this morning, that the population of the United States just hit 300 million. The United States is now the third most populous country in the world, underneath China and India. The US reached 100 million in 1915 and 200 million in 1967.

Of the 300 million people living in the United States how many of them have your exact name?

Weird Al’s “White and Nerdy” Video

October 16th, 2006 . by Jilly

I think this video was circulating on the internet a few weeks ago. My brother played this for me last night and I died laughing.

Yo, I know pi to a thousand places
Ain’t got no grills but I still wear braces
Do vector calculus just for fun
I ain’t got a gat but I got a soldering gun

Jill’s Best of Morrissey

There’s been so many Morrissey/Smith Best Of’s. But its always the same damn songs and they always overlook the good stuff. If I had to make my own handful of songs that if I was on a deserted I would never get sick of them, they would be…

I Know its Gonna Happen Someday
King Leer
Speedway
Disappointed
Wide to Receive
Last Night on Maudlin Street
Tomorrow
Seasick Yet Still Docked

Did I forget any good ones?
