Ryan Adams did a rap song, and its actually pretty damn tight. He gives shout outs to Staten Island, Ancient Sumeria, and witches.

I’ve been thinking lately that I want a pet. But my allergies suck and a cat would make it worse. The landlord won’t let us have pets, and I never did like cleaning out the litter box.
And then I saw this.
I have to have it. Its only $70.

Here is the dialogue translated…
OLD LADY: Good lord! All this goofing off this early in the morning! Get out of here, all of you, right now!
Sweetheart, shouldn’t you just take it easy? Just rest up, honey.
LITTLE KID: Hey uncle, give me a smoke.
UNCLE: Hey, little kids shouldn’t smoke, you know that.
LITTLE KID: Well, I might be just ten years old, but I know that YOU shouldn’t be smoking…so give me a smoke or else.
UNCLE: Or else what??
LITTLE KID: I’ll SQUEEEEEAL on you!
(Dialogue translated by one of Ultragrrrl’s readers)

The Science of Sleep is a new movie starring Gael Garcia Bernal. I’m really excited to see this one. Its directed by Michael Gondry, who also directed Eternal Sunshine. Following the death of his father, a shy young man moves to Paris to get closer to his widowed mother. He starts working at a boring calendar-making firm and he falls in love with his neighbor. He escapes into a dream world, that starts bleeding over into his real life.
Here’s a link to the movie trailer. Its being released in major cities September 22, and all other cities September 29.

Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette is coming out October 20. I read a nice interview with Coppola in Filter Magazine about this movie. Coppola retells the story of Marie Antoinette who married Louis XVI at the age of 15 and who was beheaded at the height of the French Revolution. She was this kid that was thrown into this crazy situation that she wasn’t prepared for. There’s a lot of myths about Antoinette’s life and Coppola wanted to take no liberties with the story; she wanted it to be totally accurate. The movie stars Kirsten Dunst, Jason Schwartzman (of Rushmore), and Molly Shannon. The soundtrack is heavy on the new wave (New Order, Bow Wow Wow, Adam Ant).
Here’s the trailer for Marie Antoinette. Will it be as good as Lost in Translation? I hope so.

I want you guys to know that at my funeral, I want this song played.
Today was the funeral for my great-grandma Delfina Galindo. She passed away at the ripe old age of 93. She succumbed to cancer in her last few years.

She had 6 kids, 9 grandkids, and 19 great grandchildren. She migrated to California in the 1920’s, she was born on December 24, 1912. She used to say that she was older than Jesus (she had a funny sense of humor, like that). When she was in her 20’s she was best friends with a lady, that would later become Marlon Brando’s wife. She was in their wedding. She loved music and she loved to cook. She owned a Mexican restaurant in Downtown LA.Every week we would go with her to In ‘N’ Out Burger and she would get a double-double. Everyone that worked there recognized her, because she ate there nearly everyday.

In her last 7 years of her life she suffered from Alzheimers and in the end our family could no longer give her the proper care needed. She slowly deteriorated to where she could no longer function and was just in pain. Her funeral was a joyful occasion, with all of our relatives, ones I haven’t seen in years. This was like the one day that my family was able to set aside all the drama and just get along, fondly remembering stories of our Grandma Fina (it was nice). Most of the stories I heard were about how hospitable she was, how she made people feel comfortable, and how her friends knew they could stop by anytime and have a drink with her.
She had a great sense of humor and her family meant everything to her. She used to always say goodbye by saying “Ay te wacho”.

A while back now my friend Tim told me Ian MacKaye had a new album with a new band, called the Evens. The band consists of only two members (Ian and Amy Farina) where they both sing and play guitar and drums. Nothing fancy here, just basic rock from one of my favorate personalities in music of all time. Great catchy songs that sound completely simple and familiar to me. I enjoy listening to their record every time.
So Ian and Amy recorded a second album entitled ‘Get Evens’ in the basement of the Dischord House. Here’s the track listing:

1. Cut From The Cloth
2. Everybody Knows
3. Cache Is Empty
4. You Fell Down
5. Pushed Against The Wall
6. No Money
7. All You Find You Keep
8. Eventually
9. Get Even
10. Dinner With The President
It’ll be available November 6th with a tour to follow. No dates have been announced, but I doubt a trip to Australia is in the cards. But if they come to a town nearby, you should go. I’ve heard good things about their live preformances.

Check out this awesome Super Mario cake. I’m going to two weddings this Saturday, but I don’t think either will have a wedding cake half as cool (and colorful) as this one.
Quinton - make me proud and get this cake. There’s still time!
