No School, No Book, No More Teacher’s Dirty Looks

May 26th, 2006 . by Jilly

Its starting to feel like summertime here. Maybe because its llike 85 degrees at midnight. Or maybe its that its been nice enough to go the beach and my husband’s little sister is graduating next weekend.

Speaking of graduations, Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips gave the commencement speech this year at his alma mater, and imparted some useful knowledge to the graduating seniors. He had some good stuff to say.

“I am not technically a high school graduate, even myself. I’m neither ashamed nor proud … It is well documented that I worked at Long John Silver’s and sold pot out of my apartment…”

Fast Food Nation - the Movie

May 23rd, 2006 . by Jilly

Awhile back, I read the book Fast Food Nation, which was kinda like the history of the fast food industry. They’ve made it into a movie, and they debuted it at the Cannes Film Festival this week. It stars Greg Kinnear, Ethan Hawke, and Patricia Arquette. I’m sure this movie will be similar to Supersize Me. Of course there’s controversy, people in the industry feel the need to defend themselves. But there is a lot of wrong being done, along the way by the people trying to make money.

You can watch the trailer here. The movie will come to the theaters this fall.

After I read the book, I decided to not eat fast food. I stuck to my guns for like a good 6 months, and then I caved. But watching and reading this kinda stuff is good motivation to eat right. And if there’s anyone that wants to share this information with their kids, this author wrote a book, just for kids called “Chew On This.”

Covers Project

May 23rd, 2006 . by Jilly

You know how there’s some songs that you never get sick of? I mean there’s some that you could just listen to forever and they’re just perfect songs. Well, My Old Kentucky Blog has been doing a lot of collecting lately. They took a couple classic songs and found all the cover versions of them. Some of the covers are pretty good.

They did this on The Smiths’ “There is a Light that Never Goes Out”, The Beach Boys’ “God Only Knows”, Neutral Milk Hotel’s “In the Aeroplane Over the Sea”, and on Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart”. Check it out here.

I especially like the Nouvelle Vague’s cover of “Love Will Tear Us Apart” here.

It seems like MOKB will probably being doing more of these cover projects, so if you know of covers that they don’t have listed…they’d probably stoked to hear from you.

Miriam Makeba- Grand finale

May 22nd, 2006 . by Sandra

Last saturday I got to see one of my childhood hero’s, the South African singer Miriam Makeba. I never thought I’d someday have the opportunity to see her perform live let alone in Iceland of all places. I discovered her when I was around six years old while exploring my dad’s old records. I remember instantly falling in love her amazing voice begging my dad to explain for me the english translation of the lyrics.

I didn’t really think she’d still be preforming being 74 years old and all. But she was amazing and her voice was as powerful as ever. I haven’t really listen to any of her new cd’s, I’m more of a fan of the music she recorded around 1950-1970. And she preformed a lot of her old hits like Pata Pata and Malaika which my sister and my 2 cousins sung so beautifully for me at my graduation. Anyway I had a great time and felt very privileged to have the chance to see her. What an amazing woman!
