Morrissey: Smiths Turned Down Millions to Reunite
March 19th, 2006 . by Jilly![]()
I came across this on Prefix Mag…
Pioneering U.K. modern rock band the Smiths have frequently turned down lucrative offers to reunite since their split in the late 1980s. The latest, to perform at the upcoming Coachella Valley Arts & Music Festival, was the highest yet, according to the band’s former frontman, Morrissey.
“If people must know, it was 5 million [dollars],” he told journalist David Fricke today (March 16) during an interview at the South By Southwest Music & Media Conference in Austin, Texas. After gasps from the fans in the audience subsided, Fricke asked Morrissey if he had considered it. “No, because money doesn’t come into it,” a response that drew applause from the crowd.

I wish Morrissey would just do his fans this little favor and give us what we want. If its not about the money, its about his pride. Maybe he’s afraid that if he does a reunion tour, that will send off the message that he’s ready to retire.
I think he’s afraid that by comparison he’ll be the fatestand the oldest. I wish he’d just get over himself. I’d like to see them before I die. Come on your the one for us fatty…good times for a change…and so on.
True, true.
C’mon Moz! All I ask of you is one thing, that you’ll never do.
why do we want a reunion so bad? Sure, it be great to see that before we die, but I always think I’m being so selfish when I ask for reunions, when what I really want is 1985 Smiths/1977 Sex Pistols/1974 Iggy and the Stooges/ect.
I’ve been disappointed with every reunion tour I’ve ever seen in my life, bar none. From the Misfits to the Pixies to Creedence Clearwater Revival(yep, I saw CCR, AND John Fogerty). It’s cool to hear the songs, but in the end, it’s sad for me.
all ego’s aside, don’t you think a reunion of any kind will be over-publisized, over-hyped and just an older/fatter/slower version of the Smiths?
Has anyone out there ever seen a reunion tour where you came away from it satisfied and expectations met?
Yes…shut up.
Just kidding…I know what you mean but The Smiths is The Smiths. No comparisons no replacements nothing like it. You can’t over-hype it!
The two most dissapointing reunion shows I’ve ever seen would be Siouxsie & The Banshees and The Pixies and yet I am so glad I saw it go down. I payed my respects to the people who taught me what music is suppose to sound like.
i saw Dinosaur Jr. the other week…and i was more than satisfied. Admittedly, i was sceptical as to whether it would measure up to my expectations, but i didn’t so much as think of it as a “reunion show”.
Jorge: i hate you for seeing siouxsie
I have a prime example; One of my co-workers was a beatnik in his prime. He was able to catch a Jack Keroauc lecture before his death. He admits that it was a bit painful because Jack was bascially a drunken mess going on about nonesense. Yet he doesn’t regret it because he was able to see the birthplace of an immortal set of ideas and style.
In my opinion it’s important to see it happen because influences sometimes seem like stuff out of storybooks. You listen you imagine you pretend you wish but then you grow up and all that starts to fade away. To have an actual memory of it regardless of how bad it might be solidifies those ideas and feelings.
Maybe it’s just my though bubbles talking but it’s how I feel.
[...] Reunions are usually disappointing, but I still would pay money to see the Smiths back together one last time. [...]
