Johnny Cash - The Musical

October 31st, 2005 . by Jilly

Johnny Cash
is set to be immortalized on Broadway. According to NME

The late legend’s life will be the focus of ‘Ring Of Fire’, directed by Richard Maltby Jr, reports Variety.

The show, which will feature Johnny Cash’s faith, love and life experiences, will feature over 49 songs by him and his late wife June Carter Cash.

The title track, ‘I’ve Been Everywhere’, ‘Folsom Prison Blues’ and ‘A Boy Named Sue’ all feature in the play, which producer Bill Meade and Phoenix Prods will preview in select cities next autumn.

But I bet Quinton already knew this.

I just saw a commercial for that new Johnny Cash movie “I Walk the Line“. Its coming out on November 18th. Joaquin Phoenix will be playing Johnny and Reese Witherspoon will be June. I’m curious if this movie will be any good. I’ve been a fan of Joaquin since he was in Spacecamp. I wonder if they’ll use his original songs for the movie. Wouldn’t that be totally awful, if they had Joaquin really sing them?

for whatever it’s worth, joaquin phoenix himself will be singing in the johnny cash movie. I’ve heard one of the songs he sings, and I think he sounds great. joaquin even sounds like johnny cash when he talks.

I didn’t think I’d like it much either when I first heard it, but I’ve gotta say, the kid sounds pretty good. I’ll be first in line at the cinema.

As long as he’s doing the songs justice. I’d like to hear what you think of the movie once it comes out.

Did you hear about that move “Beyond the Sea”? It’s the story of Bobby Darin’s life and Kevin Spacey played him. Spacey sang his songs. People said that he was so believable at being Bobby Darin, he even picked up on his mannerisms and inflections in his voice.

I hope it’s the same with “Ring of Fire”.

I am so excited about ‘Walk the Line’!!! In the previews Joaquin looks & sounds amazingly like Johnny Cash, and it’s Joaquin… he won’t let us down. I’m a little giddy about this movie.

I haven’t heard of the Bobby Darin movie, but I want to check that out now.

I’m not sure if it’s true, but I heard that all the vocal tracks from the Ray Charles movie last year were recorded by Jamie Foxx, too.

what is the release date for ‘Ring of Fire’ in the states? I think it’ll be released about a month later here in Sydney.

The movie comes out in the states November 18th.

I heard that Jamie Foxx did all the songs himself. I think people are finally taking him seriously.

Do you think you would see the Broadway musical?

I suppose it depends. I suppose if the Johnny Cash Broadway musical got completely horrible reviews then I might not go thru the effort, but otherwise, I’d try to score a cheap flight to NYC.

Would you have gone to see the Morrissey musical?

Wait, there was a Morrissey musical? How did I miss that? I would’ve gone to it.

yeah, I think there was one a while back, maybe a year ago. I remember reading an article about it. It was in the UK.

but I think it got average reviews.
