The Genius of Judd Apatow

October 20th, 2005 . by Jorge

Do you remember a little show called Freaks and Geeks, no of course you don’t. Why is that? For the same reason My-So Called life was cancelled. Television audiences had mothers who smoked during pregnancy. Why can’t we see good television when it’s sitting right in front of us? Probably because most of us don’t know what it looks like.

It’s always shows like 90210 or Dawson’s Creek that hit it big while shows like Freaks and Geeks have lifespans of 18 episodes. So we aren’t use to seeing quality on TV and when we do it’s like we get an allergic reaction. It’s as if our brain associates a certain amount of intelligence with reading and immediately sends a level 10 emergency signal to the rest of our body, this is not a drill change the channel, I repeat not a drill. I’ve decided that the best solution was to shut off my cable and just buy DVD collections of shows that I actually enjoy watching. Just recently I added two sets to my collection, Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared. Both shows were critically acclaimed, only survived one season and were created by Judd Apatow.

The night I purchased Undeclared I was actually on a mission to purchase the third season of Reno 911 but was unable to find it. Frustrated and disappointed I looked for a replacement and of course all I could find were rows after rows of Friends episodes. Luckily I kept searching and came across Undeclared, I remember watching the show when it was in syndication and lost touch with it. I decided to purchase the series and can’t stop watching it since.

The premise of the show is freshman year in college the main character is Steven a painfully skinny geek who is determined to change his image in college. Other characters include Lloyd a hot English guy all the girls pine after, Lizzy Steve’s romantic interest, Rachel Lloyd’s counter part, Ron and Marshall who share a dorm room with Steve and Lloyd. As an added bonus Steve’s dad a depressed pathetic divorcee is played by Loudon Wainwright as in Rufus Wainwright. This show was born to be a cult classic. Undeclared is an intelligent laugh out loud comedy, but if drama is your thing go out and get Freaks and Geeks.

From this day forward if I ever hear of anything Judd Apatow is involved in I’ll buy, watch and advocate it.

this is what we were watching the other night, eh? yeah, it was pretty funny. but i must confess, i also like the other, “cheesier” teen shows. well, teen movies, i should say. they’re just so over-the-top and formulaic. I love it!!
i’ll never tire of seeing the nerdy guy get the cheerleader (reverse that for Sixteen Candles) or the outcasts get their revenge on the A group.

Without looking at Judd’s face it’s safe to say that he and the cast of freaks and geeks most likely have much in common. Nearly the entire cast of F & G are Jews with the minor exception of the low life “freaks” which are portrayed as trouble making losers. Now, if you don’t have a solid grasp on the Zionist influence in American media then you would probably think that this show is just your average 80′ kids in the hall show when in reality you’re watching something else.

Tristan: Please correct me if I’m wrong, is that an anti-semitic tone I hear? I’m asking not assuming because I’m intelligent enough to know that without looking at your face I can ONLY assume that your brows and forehead were strained and your teeth grinding when you typed this comment.
