Rocket Men

October 12th, 2005 . by Quinton

my morning jacket -z

I remember being really impressed when I first saw M. Ward and Jim James from My Morning Jacket perform live, and I always meant to pick up something by My Morning Jacket, but never got around to it.

Last week My Morning Jacket released Z, their fourth full length album on ATO/RCA label. In all honesty, I wasn’t expecting to like it, thinking of My Morning Jacket as the type of band I’d like to see live, but not own an album. I’m wrong, and pleasantly surprised by Z.

This album seems to be less indie/folk or alt-country as I thought it would be, and more just an album I really enjoy listening to twice. The lead songwriter, singer, and guitarist Jim James has such a sweet and timeless voice that’s close to Neil Young or The Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne. My Morning Jacket are on tour now, and will be at the San Diego House of Blues on Tuesday, November 8th. As always, you can pick up tickets from their website instead of going through that evil empire.

On a side note, if you do pick up this album, ATO records released a statement about how you might have trouble downloading it to your iPod, since it is a ‘Copy-Protected CD’. ATO and My Morning Jacket were unaware and upset of the use of this new technology through their distributor, Sony BMG, and have set up links to help ‘walkaround’ this inconvenience. That being said, I hope it doesn’t discourage anyone from picking up a splendid record.

Got tickets to see them last night out in Lancaster, PA (the sticks). It was a small place with very good sound. Great band to see live. Go see them now while you can still catch them at the smaller venues. Jim James has tremendous vocal range,

I wanna have ten thousand of Jim James’ babies. I too saw him live and his voice literally made my heart swell, i thought it was going to jump out of my chest. i remember the first time i heard him–”hopefully” on the headphones in a record store, brought me to tears. i WILL be picking this album up.
